But stepping into the shoes of an Art Director requires a completely different lens; it is the leap from executing a style to conceptualising, directing, and producing campaigns that shape trends. The Master Art Director Course is an elite, two-year creative pathway tailored for ambitious, master-level hair professionals. Over four immersive modules, you will step beyond the chair and learn how to manage production budgets, direct full creative teams and get your work published in leading global titles. Course Structure: A 2-Year Path to Mastery
The programme spans up to two academic years, building your creative capabilities step-by-step: Year 1: Module 1 (Photoshoots) & Module 2 (Seminar & Stage) Year 2: Module 3 (Fashion Weeks) & Module 4 (Brand & Industry Impact)
Module 1: Photoshoots – Concept to Published Work
Format: 17 Hours Live Online (Interactive Workshops & Pitching Sessions) + 1 Full-Day Live Studio Shoot + 3-Hour Final Curation & Assessment The Focus: The Visionary Eye Learn how to take an abstract spark of non-hair inspiration from a blank sheet of paper to a fully realised, award-worthy collection and published editorial campaign. What You’ll Master: Concept Development & The Shoot Deck: Sourcing high-concept inspiration beyond social media trends to build original narratives, then converting moodboards into precise, discipline-specific Shoot Decks for Hair, Make-up, Wardrobe, and Photography. Production & Team Leadership: Mastering the operational backbone of art direction—hair-first model casting, legal release contracts, call sheets, budget management, and leading a shared creative crew on set. Live Studio Directing: A hands-on, full-day production in a professional studio, mentored by Rae Palmer and shot by award-winning photographer Richard Miles. Experience the set from both sides—calling the shots as Creative Lead for your look and supporting your peers as On-Set Hair Detail Monitor. Curation & Publishing Strategy: Navigating post-production with a critical eye, writing precise retoucher briefs that clean up flyaways while protecting natural hair texture, and building a portfolio formatted for British Hairdressing Award (BHA) entries and global editorial features.
Module 2: Seminar & Stage Work – The Educational Platform
Format: Theory & Strategy Workshops + Live Event Placement The Focus: High-Impact Live Productions. Master the logistics, messaging, and presence needed to run major stage shows and educational seminars. What You’ll Master: Show Planning & Production: Writing production briefs, managing stage budgets, and coordinating technical teams (lighting, sound, AV). Backstage & Runway Mechanics: Controlling the pace, energy, and timing of live event turnouts. Live Industry Placement: Gain real-world backstage experience by assisting at major industry events (such as the Hair Pro Awards or Annual Graduation).
Module 3: Fashion Week – The Fast-Paced Runway (Launching 2027)
Format: 1 Full-Day Session Styling Intensive + Live Fashion Week Experience The Focus: High-Speed High Fashion. Step into the fast-paced world of international runway styling. What You’ll Master: Runway Technique Intensive: A full-day CPD session focused on rapid look execution, longevity under heat, and high-fashion hair direction. Backstage Placement: Experience the thrill of working backstage at a live Fashion Week event, building your stamina and industry network. (Note: Accommodation and travel expenses are not included).
Module 4: Personal Brand, Pitching & Industry Leadership
Format: Interactive Masterclasses + Portfolio Synthesis & Pitching The Focus: Bringing It All Together. Turn your portfolio into a personal brand that commands attention, commercial deals, and authority. What You’ll Master: Defining Your Creative Signature: Establishing your unique brand identity and commercial aesthetic in a crowded market. Pitching & Presentation: Learning how to present creative concepts confidently to corporate brands, media outlets, and commercial clients. High-Stakes Networking: Building genuine, lasting relationships with agency directors, editorial leads, and brand sponsors. Is This Course Right for You?
Because this course operates at a master level, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Experience: 5+ years of salon experience working at a Master Level.
- Accreditation: Active WELOVE registration with Four or Five Purple Hearts (completed or in progress).
- Registrations: Active registration with WELOVE (minimum Four Purple Hearts, completed or in progress) and Master State Registration with The Hair Council.
- Portfolio: Evidence of strong technical foundation and a passion for creative direction.
- Pre-Assessment: Successful pre-assessment by an IQA (confirming active insurance, professional references, and proof of education).

- Module-by-Module: Take individual modules as standalone CPD credentials to boost specific skills.
- Full Master Art Director Accreditation: Complete all four modules across the two-academic-year cycle to receive your ultimate Creative Direction accreditation.
