THE NEED FOR STANDARDISATION AND REGISTRATION

Raising standards across the UK hair industry

Alongside The Hair Council and HABIA, we're championing the cause for regulation and mandatory licensing for all UK hairdressers.

  • Guaranteed Competence: It ensures that every practicing professional has met a minimum standard of training and qualification, preventing "cowboy" stylists from operating without basic skills.
  • Chemical Safety: Hairdressing involves hazardous chemicals (bleaches, tints, perms). Registration ensures stylists understand COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) to prevent chemical burns or severe allergic reactions.
  • Hygiene Standards: It enforces strict protocols for sanitation and sterilisation of tools, reducing the risk of spreading skin infections, head lice, or blood-borne pathogens.
  • Accountability: Provides a clear route for consumer complaints and a mechanism to "strike off" or penalise practitioners who are negligent or unsafe.
  • Parity with Other Professions: It brings the industry in line with other regulated sectors like nurses, dentists, or gas engineers, elevating the social and professional status of hairdressers.
  • Credibility and Trust: A "State Registered" title acts as a badge of quality, giving clients peace of mind that they are in the hands of a verified professional.
  • Career Longevity: By requiring Continuing Professional Development (CPD), registration encourages stylists to keep their skills up to date with modern techniques and safety standards.
  • Level Playing Field: It prevents unfair competition from unqualified individuals who can undercharge because they don't invest in proper training or insurance.
  • Insurance Validity: Many insurance providers require proof of qualification to provide public liability cover. Mandatory registration makes this process seamless and ensures all shops are properly covered.
  • Government Representation: A mandatory register provides accurate data on the size and economic impact of the industry, giving the sector a stronger "single voice" when lobbying the government for financial support or tax changes.
